I don't get art.

Can someone please explain why in heaven's name this painting sold for $33.6 million?

Because it's a Lucien Freud and he's an "up-and-coming/almost-arrived". He's had shows in the MoMA and Tate British, and in the past his paintings have sold for millions but this one is record setting. Speaking of settings it may also have something to do with the fact that it was Christie's that auctioned it and that it was in the same set as paintings by well-known names like Rothko.

I'm with you Rachel. I could take that money and open up hundreds of ministries that would provide great art from thousands of artists who would provide paintings for refrigerators and walls for centuries.

The artist is obviously good...but how could you look at that everyday and know you paid 33.6 mil for it?

Yeah...the nurse in me wants to lift up one of the folds and sprinkle Nystatin powder in there.
